The Catholic Church today announced that four Cuban political prisoners would be released and leave the country to take exile in Spain.
That is a good thing, especially for the prisoners and for their families.
But keep it all in perspective with two important caveats:
- Like for all but one of the other political prisoners released since last summer with the assistance of the church and Spanish government, the prisoners are being required to take overseas exile. They are not completely free.
- And none of the four prisoners are covered by the much ballyhooed agreement reached last summer between Havana, Madrid and the church. Eleven prisoners of conscience remain in jail because of their refusal to comply with the church's and Spain's deal with the devil.
The bottom line is this: Once again, nothing in Cuba has changed.

The only one of the prisoners I have previously profiled here is Alexis Borges.
