Cuban independent journalist and activist Guillermo Fariñas was released from jail Thursday evening, 27 hours after he was arrested while paying tribute to Orlando Zapata Tamayo on the first anniversary of the political prisoner's death.
Fariñas said the government's crackdown this week has only elevated Zapata's status in Cuba.
"I think the best tribute we can pay Zapata is that the government has to mobilize its oppressors," Fariñas said.
Fariñas, the recipient last year of Europe's top human rights prize, was arrested Wednesday when after a confrontation with a police official, he climbed on the roof of his home in Santa Clara and started shouting anti-government slogans.
After Fariñas was taken away, a bus stopped outside of his home and about 40 people came out and started shouting pro-government slogans, according to his wife.
