The old presidential palace, Havana.
Stirring to start a social media revolution in Cuba, organizers of a Facebook group calling for a popular uprising on the island have called for Cubans to gather for a demonstration on Feb. 21 in Havana.
The protest will be to "demand the freedom and democracy that have been taken from us," states a message on the group's Facebook page.
The message calls for Cubans to gather at 5 p.m. outside the old presidential palace in Havana, which is now the "Museum of the Revolution."
In Cuba, as in Egypt, Iran and elsewhere where this kind of activity is not well received by the autocrats in power, this is a dangerous business, making it vital that those of us who share the same goals as the organizers do our part to support them.
Spread the word about what is happening in Cuba.
Attend related events being scheduled around the world.
Pray for those who will risk what little freedom they enjoy, who will risk their lives to demand what is theirs — their freedom, their democracy, their human rights.
The odds are stacked against them, and conditions in Cuba are very different than in Egypt. A social media revolution on the island is not easily organized or attained.
But what is certain is that as recent events in Egypt and Tunisia show, history is on the side of those with the courage and creativity to demand what is theirs.
Now is the time for you to pick sides and to do what you can — even if it's just to share a link you see on Facebook or to pray — to help.
