The Cuban Catholic Church this weekend announced the release of eight Cuban political prisoners. One of prisoners, Pedro Argüelles Morán, will stay in Cuba, while the other seven are being forced to take exile in Spain.
Argüelles was one of five prisoners still in jail despite a much ballyhooed July 2010 agreement for their release. Forty-eight of the 52 prisoners covered by the agreement have been released, with most having taken exile in Spain, Chile or the United States — a condition that Argüelles and several others had refused to accept as a condition of their "freedom."
Argüelles is staying in Cuba, and he is committed to returning to the work that landed him in prison almost eight years ago.
The other seven prisoners set to be released are:
- Lazaro Ricardo Chacon Ordoñez
- Luis Caro Chavez
- Antonio Rodriguez Almaguer
- Agustin Cervantes Garcia
- Ricardo Galvan Casal
- Luis Mariano Delis Utria
- Yoel Rodriguez Izquierdo
