Jimmy Carter and Cardinal Jaime Ortega
Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter on Monday arrived in Havana and met with Roman Catholic prelate Cardinal Jaime Ortega.
There was no word on whether this means Alan Gross is about to be released and expelled to Spain.
Seriously — or at least a little more seriously — the tone and facts of the CBS News report suggest there is all but zero chance that the Castro dictatorship will take advantage of the opportunity presented to it by the Carter visit and be done with the Gross episode.
It won't come easy for the peanut farmer from Georgia — history shows how much the dictatorship likes making Carter look like a fool.
But the Cubans have all the incentive in the world to take advantage of the cover Carter's trip provides and to release Gross, so it can get back to fooling the current occupant of the White House into believing that the Castro regime is worthy of further concessions.
Meanwhile, just in time for Carter's visit, the dictatorship reminded Cubans and anyone else paying attention that it has not changed, by arresting several dissidents in Havana and around the country who were trying to grab Carter's attention.
