Perhaps shamed into silence by a realization that he has deferred too much to his hosts, the Castro brothers, Jimmy Carter had little to say about his visit to Cuba this week — except to call for the end of the "embargo," the release from American prisons of five Cuban spies and for the Cuban government to listen to its critics on the island.
If he accomplished anything, it is this: He provided some well-deserved moral support for Cuba's opposition by carving out a sliver of time to meet with them.
A Miami Herald story about the meeting includes this nugget about a message that hopefully made an impression on Carter — if that is possible.
Angel Moya, who was serving a 20-year sentence until his release in February, said he read parts of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights to Carter and then told him, “For that, we were sent to prison.”
