Long-imprisoned political prisoners Andy Frometa Cuenca and Alfredo Nuez Tupiñan are laying their lives on the line in their respective pursuits for justice.
Frometa, in jail for 19 years, and Neux, imprisoned for 13 years, have been on hunger strike since mid-April to demand the release of all political prisoners in Cuba. Both are inmates at a prison in Guantanamo.
The dictatorship is not taking the challenge to their authority lightly. For example, soon after Frometa started his protest, guard threw him into a punishment cell, complete with no light or water.
Frometa, serving a 47-year sentence for "disrespect," "assault" and "illegal exit from the country," has spent about 12 years of his time imprisoned in punishment cells.
Nuez is serving a 15-year sentence for "disrespect," "subversive propaganda" and "revealing secrets."
