Six months after an underwater cable reached Cuba from Venezuela, there's no word on how the Castro regime plans to better connect the island to the Internet.
But unable to control itself, the regime has intensified its control of the Internet, restricting government employees' access to Facebook and on networks that provide "illegal" e-mail accounts.
And in a move that belies the availablity of the new high-speed connections, Internet speeds at hotels in Santiago de Cuba have slowed.
"Nobody can explain how these things happen if one assumes that the cable is already here," said independent journalist Luis Felipe Rojas.
The fact is, the Internet scares the regime to death and regardless of the largess of its Venezuelan benefactors, the Castros have no intent of making it easier for Cubans to get online.
For it would put their very survival at risk.
