Cuban dissident Jorge Cervantes García was released from prison on Thursday, after several months of being jailed with no formal charges ever being filed.
Cervantes, who carried out a lengthy hunger strike while in jail, rejected a chance to take overseas exile and instead will remain in Cuba. And despite a warning from police about continuing with his activism, he will rejoin the struggle for Cuban freedom, according former prisoner of conscience Luis Enrique Ferrer García.
"He will stay in Cuba and rejoin the struggle for a better future," Ferrer said. "He told me that he has no intention of leaving his country."
With his release, Cervantes scored a big victory over the Castro dictatorship and for the cause of Cuban freedom.
The significance of that win will only grow in the future.
