Laura Pollan, leader of the Cuban Damas De Blanco, tells Radio Marti she will meet with Catholic Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Ortega to ask him to intercede with the Castro dictatorship to halt the summerlong repression of the Damas and their allies.
The Cuban police and their minions have been targeting the Damas for six consecutive weekends, often blocking them from gathering for Mass in Santiago de Cuba and elsewhere. The crackdown has become increasingly violent, as the government's fear of what these women represent grows.
The fact that Pollan has to ask that of the cardinal, who has shown himself more comfortable confabbing with the regime then in stepping up for his flock, reveals everything there is wrong with the prelate.
UPDATED, Aug. 30, 2011 -- The cardinal was too tired to meet, but he did send an aide. The Damas say they didn't mind.
