March for Laura Pollan, Tampa, Fla., Oct. 23, 2011
The most valuable lesson that the Laura Pollan left Cuba and those who fight for her freedom, is that it is possible for one person with courage and faith to stand up to the Castro dictatorship and win. As long as one person is willing to carry on that legacy, that struggle she lead so valiantly, her death will not be in vain.
We walked in her memory on Sunday in Tampa. Similar events have taken place in Miami, Cuba and around the world. Laura Pollan is not forgotten.
But more than marches, what the struggle for Cuban freedom needs is for more individuals, in Cuba and elsewhere, to stand up and demand that their rights and those of all Cubans be honored and respected. As for those of us beyond the long arm of the Castro dictatorship, we must find our way to "walk for Laura Pollan," by telling her story, and that of the people she so well represented.
That is the best way to make sure the legacy of Laura Pollan never dies.
Already, it is certain that it will not die the minds and hearts of the Damas De , or "Ladies In White," she lead with such power and grace.
Within days of her death, the Damas moved to change the name of their organization to the Laura Pollan Damas De Blanco.
LAURA POLLAN VIVE!
