Pedro de la Caridad Alvarez Pedroso
Cuban political prisoner Pedro de la Caridad Alvarez Pedroso, imprisoned since December 1991, started a hunger strike Nov. 22 to demand benefits due him because of the length of time he has served in jail and to protest abuses by his jailers.
A former resident of the United States, Alvarez and two other men were originally sentenced to death after they snuck into the island to oppose the Castro dictatorship. One of the men, Eduardo Díaz Betancourt, was executed in January 1992, but the sentences for Alvarez and Daniel Santovenia Fernandez were commuted to 30 years.
