The first 10 days of December, culiminating with International Human Rights Day on Saturday, saw a record round of repression in Cuba, according to Elizardo Sanchez, one of the island's preeminent human rights activists.
The Castro police made more than 300 political arrests, according to Sanchez, head of the unofficial Cuban Commission on Human Rights and National Reconciliation.
"I don't think the count will drop below 300, which would be a really negative record for the government in decades," Sanchez said. "So, so many arrests in such a short time, many people deprived of their liberty, arbitrarily, within 10 days."
