Via Twitter, Cuban independent journalist Felix Reyes reports that Cuban political prisoner José Ramón Falcón Gómez has been released after spending 18 years and 12 days in various Cuban prisons.
Falcón and six other
were captured shortly after they on Oct. 15, 1994, landed on Santa Maria Key in Villa Clara province, with the apparent intent to foment rebellion in the Cuban mountains. A Cuban guard was killed during a firefight.
They were all tried, convicted of "acts against the security of the state," and sentenced to lengthy prison terms.
Falcón was sentenced 20 years in prison.
