Cuban political prisoner Jorge Alberto Liriano, a jailhouse correspondent for one of Cuba's most active independent news agencies, has been released after some 14 years in the Castro gulag.
"I am happy to be with my somn; quickly, I will visit my colleagues to continuing struggling for Cuban freedom," Liriano said Tuesday after he was released from the Kilo 8 prison in Camaguey.
Originally imprisoned after he was convicted of economic crimes, Liriano in 2007 began working for the Hablemos Press news agency and human rights group, reporting on the abuses he has witnessed in Cuban jails. As a result, guards frequently beat and tortured Liriano and thrown him in isolation cells.
It is heartening to know that his captors did not break his spirit.
