On a hunger strike now more than 60 days long, Cuban politcal prisoner Marcelino Abreu needs the world to know his name today, not tomorrow, not after he dies. Marcelino Abreu needs the world to speak up for him now to demand the Castro regime meet his demand and release him immediately.
Marcelino Abreu needs the world to help save his life.
Which is why other dissidents on the island and their supporters overseas are planning to take to Twitter and other social media on Friday morning to demand:
#FreeMarcelino
The campaign was started by noted Cuban activist Sara Marta Fonseca, who again demonstrated a trait common among the Cuban opposition: A willingess to step up on behalf of their fellow activists when confronting the Castro dictatorship.
Stepping up to challenge the regime is what landed Abreu in jail on Aug. 13, 2012 -- Fidel Castro's birthday -- when he took to the streets.
More than a year later, on Aug. 29, Abreu was convicted of "public disorder" and "disrespecting" Fidel Castro and was sentenced to 4 years in prison. On Sept. 20, he started his hunger strike to demand his freedom.
The latest was that he was in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Santa Clara.
