Worries about the health of imprisoned Cuban independent journalist Yoeni Jesús Guerra García are rising after he was severely beaten by political police agents and guards at the Nieves Morejón in Sancti Spíritus.
Another inmate, Vidal Antunez, told independent journalist Tania Maceda Guerra that Guerra Garcia was suffering from injuries to his head, back and arms.
On the night of Nov. 16, according to Antunez, guards forced Guerra Garcia to stand with his arms tied above his head to the bars of his cell. The next morning, he had to be transferred to the prison infirmary.
"Please do something for this brave journalist and human rights defender!" Antunez said.
Guerra Garcia, a correspondent for the the Yayabo Press news agency and leading democracy and human rights activist in Sancti Spirtus, was arrested last month. The authorties have what Maceda Guerra described as "fabricated" charges of theft and slaughter of cattle that could carry as much as 20 years in prison.
