After three consecutive months of declines, repression in Cuba as measured by the number of politically motivated arrests was again on the upswing in April.
The Cuban Commission of Human Rights and National Reconciliation reported there were at least 905 political arrests last month. That's up from 813 in March, and brings the total through April 30 to 3,821 -- which is more than twice that had been recorded during the same period last year and almost 60 percent of the number recorded in all of 2013.
If the torrid monthly pace continues, the number of arrests this year could top more than 11,400, which would be almost as much that were recorded in 2012 and 2013, combined.
