Amado Verdecia, an activist with the Patriotic Union of Cuba, on Thursday was sentenced to 5 years in prison, after he was convicted last month on a supposed charge of "assault."
A veteran activist, Verdecia was arrested in August 2013. During his trial, numerous other UNPACU activists were arrested outside the courthouse when they tried to demonstrate their support for him.
Other details of the case were not available.
Several years ago, the dictatorship denied Verdecia permission to leave Cuba so he could move to the United States as a political refugee, according to the Twitter feed of UNPACU leader Jose Daniel Ferrer Garcia.
