The Hablemos Press news agency and human rights monitor recorded at least 989 politically motivated arrests and detentions during June, bringing the total for the year to 5,586,
The count for the first half of 2014 was just shy of the 5,718 arrests recorded in all of 2013; and more than the 5,503 in 2012.
The count in June was the second-highest monthly tally so far in 2014, trailing only May when there were 1,101 arrests recorded by Hablemos Press, or CIHPRESS.
The numbers reported by CIHPRESS differ -- but only slightly -- from those reported by another human rights group on the island, the Cuban Commission on Human Rights and National Reconciliation, which counted 963 arrests in June.
Blame it on the difficulty of obtaining information about arrests and other police activity in a country where those in power have no interest in being held accountable, especially for how it treats its opposition.
The exact numbers may differ but the story is the same: Repression is on a brutal rise in Cuba.
