The sentencing of three imprisoned brothers listed by Amnesty International as prisoners of conscience has apparently been delayed, according to the human rights organization.
The sentencing of Alexeis Vargas Martin, 22, and his two 18-year-old twin brothers, Vianco Vargas Martín and Django Vargas Martín, was supposed to have taken place on July 1. But when their mother went to a courthouse to collect the sentencing documents, they were not available, according to AI.
"According to local activists the authorities may try to convince the three brothers to give up their activism and this could be the reason behind the postponement," AI said in a statement.
Amnesty International renewed its call for the brothers, activists with the Patriotic Union of Cuba, to be released.
"Amnesty International believes that their arrest and detention is in response to their peaceful exercise of their right to freedom of expression and that it is intended to send a message of intimidation to other government critics, particularly other members of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (Unión Patriótica de Cuba, UNPACU). The three brothers are prisoners of conscience and must be immediately and unconditionally released."
