Cuban prosecutors are seeking a five-year prison sentence for opposition activist Ciro Alexis Casanova Pérez, after he ignored a house arrest and went out on the streets to protest against the Castro dictatorship.
Casanova, a member of the Orlando Zapata Tamayo National Resistance Front, was originally arrested this past June 5, after in the city of Placetas he displayed a sheet calling on the the Student and Youth Revolutionary Directorate to "awake."
The authorities ordered house arrest for Casnova, which he rejected as "arbitrary and a violation of his basic rights."
He broke his house arrest and was again detained and transferred to the La Pendiente prison, where he remains held.
In response to the announcement by the prosecutor's office in Santa Clara that it would seek a 5-year prison sentence for charges of "public disorder" and "disrespect," Casanova started a hunger strike.
The OZT Front, which is headed by former political prisoner Jorge Luis Perez Garcia, "Antunez," is comprised of several organization.
