Four days after Cuban State Security warned former political prisoner Ramón Alejandro Muñoz to "stay calm" and avoid any political activities, a thug on a bike cut Muñoz with a broken bottle.
Muñoz, the husband of Cuban Lady In White and fellow ex-political prisoner Sonia Garro Alfosno, believes there is a connection between the two incidents.
"I only have two enemies -- Fidel Castro and Raul Castro," he told Cuban independent journalist Roberto de Jesus Guerra of Hablemos Press.
The attack, which occurred Feb. 7, left Muñoz with six stitches in his right shoulder.
Muñoz and Garro were among the 53 political prisoners that American officials say were released as part of negotiations between Washington and Havana to restore diplomatic relations. However, Muñoz, Garro and some of the others were released before the deal was struck.
The couple and another activist, Eugenio Hernández, had been in jail since March 2012 when they were arrested during a crackdown leading up to the visit to Cuba of Pope Benedict XVI.
They had been told they faced charges of public disorder and attempted murder, but their trials were postponed at least four times before they were released. The charges have subsequently been dropped.
The attack on Muñoz was at least the second such assault on a Cuban opposition activist in recent weeks, coinciding with continuing warm-up between the Castro dictatorship and the Obama administration.
