Some 300 peaceful opposition activist took to the streets of Cuban cities Sunday as part of the #TodosMarchamos campaign to demand the release of all political prisoners, especially Amnesty International prisoner of conscience Danilo "El Sexto" Maldonado and the three activists arrested at Pope Francis' Mass in Havana on Sept. 21.
On at least the 26th straight Sunday of political repression on the island, 80 activists in Santiago, nine in Guantanamo and five in Cienfuegos were arrested, according to various reports from the island.
Among those arrested in Santiago was former prisoner of conscience Jose Daniel Ferrer Garcia, head of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), whose activists were at the vanguard of Sunday's protests. The three activists arrested at the papal Mass, Zaqueo Baéz, Boris Reni, Aymara Nieto Muñoz and Maria Josefa Acon Sardiña, are members of an UNPACU cell in Havana.
Most activists arrested during the #TodosMarchamos protests are released a short time later, as happened on Sunday. As of Sunday, Ferrer had been released, but he told Diario de Cuba that five activists remained in custody.
In Havana, 51 members of the Damas De Blanco were able to march, despite police efforts to intimidate them to stay at home.
